Short Biography:
Paul Pauwels studied at RITCS film school in Brussels where he got his degree as director and producer.
He worked as production manager and unit manager in feature film production until 1987, when he founded his own production company: Periscope Productions. The company produced commercials, short feature films and internationally financed documentaries. The company was sold in 2005, when
Paul Pauwels was invited to become programmer manager at VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster.
There he was in charge of the science and history department and was the liaison officer with the independent documentary community. He left this position in December 2007 to become the project manager for the EUROPEAN TELEVISION AND MEDIA MANAGEMENT ACADEMY in
Strasbourg, France. In December 2007 Paul Pauwels was nominated the director of this international training institute, a position he occupied until October 2011, when the school ended its activities in Strasbourg. Paul Pauwels still teaches Documentary Production at the LUCA School of Arts in
Belgium. In 2012-2013 he became the managing director and in a later stage the owner/producer of production company Congoo BVBA, combining international production with activities as an expert, moderator and tutor for training organizations. He advised producers and directors of factual programs, sometimes accepting the position of executive producer. In May 2013 Paul Pauwels accepted the position of Director of the European Documentary Network (EDN) which he still holds until today. He
is a member of the General Assembly of the Flanders Film Fund (VAF). He also maintains his position as expert reader for the same funding body.
